Hosting during SOS Midwinter: the shaggers are coming
8 min read
Every January, thousands of shag dancers descend on Ocean Drive in North Myrtle Beach for SOS Midwinter β four days of beach music, dance workshops, and packed clubs. The 2027 dates are January 14β17. If you host events, run a restaurant, or plan gatherings on the Grand Strand, this is one of the most reliable winter crowds you'll ever see.
What SOS Midwinter actually is
SOS stands for the Society of Stranders, a shag dancing association formed in 1980. They gather in North Myrtle Beach three times a year β the Mid-Winter Break in January, Spring Safari in April, and Fall Migration in September. Midwinter is the smallest of the three, but it's still days of packed dance floors.
The action centers on Ocean Drive's legendary clubs: Fat Harold's Beach Club (the best-known shag floor anywhere), Duck's Beach Club, OD Arcade & Lounge, Pirate's Cove, and the Spanish Galleon. A $35 annual SOS membership card gets you into all participating clubs.
The Carolina shag is South Carolina's official state dance β a smooth partner dance done to beach music that grew up in the Ocean Drive pavilions in the 1940s. During Midwinter, the clubs run shag workshops for beginners and advanced dancers alongside the nightly social dancing.
Why this matters for event hosts
- A built-in audience. Thousands of visitors who come specifically to socialize, dance, and spend money. They eat out, they drink, they shop β and they're here for four days.
- Private events ride the wave. Shag clubs from across the Carolinas travel as groups. Reunions, club dinners, birthday celebrations, and anniversary parties all happen around the dance schedule. If your venue is near Ocean Drive, you're in the zone.
- January is otherwise dead. This is the single biggest winter event on the north end. Restaurants and venues that plan for it do January numbers that look like spring.
How to host during Midwinter
- Book early. Groups plan months ahead. If you want the club-dinner or private-party business, your availability should be visible by fall.
- Know the dance schedule. Daytime is workshops and socializing; the clubs fill up at night. Afternoon and early-evening private events fit the rhythm β guests can go from your event straight to Fat Harold's.
- Lean into the theme. Beach music, vintage coastal dΓ©cor, a dance floor of your own β shaggers appreciate a venue that gets it. You don't need to be a shag club; you just need to not be confused about why everyone's in town.
- Feed them. Group dinners are the biggest opportunity. A 20-person shag club needs a private room and a set menu. That's straightforward, high-margin business in the middle of January.
